I have become fascinated by the luminous work of German artist Florian Schaab. In teaching watercolors, I encourage students to look for large shapes in an image they want to paint, identifying light, medium, and dark values. Painting a value study is a fine way to train our eyes and hands to do this - so I used a lovely painting by Schaab to demonstrate to a class how to paint a value study.
