The Common Loon is Minnesota's state bird. Before living here, I thought the definition of a loon might be something like silly or foolish. But hearing these graceful creatures, with their haunting calls, soon changed my mind. My Watercolor Birds class chose this image for one of their reference photos, and I had fun demonstrating the use of masking fluid to preserve the intricate white spots and strips on these beauties.
