This is sample I created for my class this fall, demonstrating the use masking tape to preserve the shapes of birch trees before painting a scene. You can paint as if the birches aren't there, allowing you to envision the entire scene as a whole. Then when the tape is removed, tone is added to the birch shapes that were initially masked off.
